The Forms He
Set Down

The essence of many arts, with Taizu quan 太祖拳 at the core.

"San Cheen Do incorporates the essence of various martial arts, with Taizu quan 太祖拳 constituting the core."

The institute preserves traditional Taizu quan, free sparring, self-defence, resilience and conditioning. Many of its black-belt instructors held credentials in Boxing, Muay Thai, Karate, Judo and other Chinese martial styles.

The Disciplines

Forms 套路

Kata, the five San Cheen 三战 forms, Liao Cheen and Singa Fist — technique taught inside the form, always with combative intent.

Free Sparring 散打

The competitive backbone of the school — power, timing and the ability to withstand blows, tested against a live opponent.

Conditioning 抗打

Old-school limb conditioning and resilience training that builds the durable, rooted body Taizu quan is known for.

The Path

From Yellow to Black 9th Dan.

The syllabus ran from Yellow 1 through to Black 9th Dan, each grade tied to specific forms and durations — from three months to four years. Titles progressed from Student and Warrior, through the Teacher levels, to Master and Grand Master.

Nine batches of disciples

Across five decades, San Cheen Do graded black-belt graduates year after year — from 1977 through to the present. Grandmaster Teo trained nine batches of disciples, each carrying forward the traditional kuntao and the combative heart of the San Cheen forms.

Singa Fist 新加拳 was incorporated into the grading system, with Brown 3 students assessed on it before advancing — the same art demonstrated at National Day 1987 and the 4,000-strong showcase of 1988.

Singa Fist

As its name suggests, Singa Fist is a unique blend of martial arts — representing each of the eight different masters of the Singapore Martial Arts Instructors' Association. It was eventually incorporated into the grading system in San Cheen Do: all students at Brown 3 were assessed on it before advancing to Brown 2.

In 1987, students from Grandmaster Teo Choon Teck's class showcased the Singa Fist as part of the National Day performance line-up. During its heyday it was also demonstrated by 4,000 martial-arts enthusiasts at the largest-ever joint martial-arts showcase of its time, in 1988.
